2010 Coaches

2010 Coach Amanda Amanda Higuchi will be our Head Coach this summer, rejoining us for her 5th year as a Twin Hickory swim coach. She is a 2009 graduate of the College of William and Mary where she majored in Neuroscience. She just finished her first year at MCV School of Pharmacy where she is pursuing her PharmD. Amanda swam both year around and on a summer league swim team for 12 years. Here in Richmond she swam at NOVA and in North Carolina she swam at the Winston-Salem YMCA. She also swam on the W&M varsity swim team her freshman year of college. Coach Amanda is looking forward to another great summer and getting to know each swimmer this season!

2010 Coach Michael Michael Crawley will be joining us for his first season as Assistant Coach for the Torpedoes this summer. He graduated from Mills Godwin High School in 2009 and will be a sophomore at UVA this fall. He grew up swimming at Church Run and NOVA and now swims for UVA. Michael loves summer league swimming and teaching swimming lessons and is really excited about coaching with the Torpedoes this summer!

2010 Coach Anna Anna Dietz is a 2008 graduate of Deep Run High School and just finished her sophomore year at Virginia Tech studying business management. She swam for 8 years on the Twin Hickory swim team and for 4 years competitively at the Shady Grove Family YMCA. This is her second year as an Assistant Coach for Twin Hickory and she couldn't be more excited to be returning to such a wonderful team! She looks forward to a great season and meeting all the new swimmers!

2010 Coach Carrie Carrie Goodman joins our staff for the first time as an Assistant Coach. She is a 2009 graduate of Deep Run High School and just finished her first year at Old Dominion University. Carrie is pursuing a degree in biochemistry. She swam competitively for the Shady Grove Family YMCA for 10 years and also enjoyed 9 summers as a Wyndham Tidal Wave. Carrie now swims as a Lady Monarch at Old Dominion. She is a sprint freestyler. Coach Carrie can't wait for summer swim season to start, as she has always wanted to be a coach for a summer swim team.

2010 Coach Austin Austin Highfill just finished his senior year at Deep Run High School. He swam with the Twin Hickory Torpedoes since its inception in 2002 and for NOVA for the past two years. He plans on swimming at the next level in college where he also plans to study business. This will be Austin's third year coaching the Torpedoes and he looks forward to this season.

Coaches Communication Notebook - Need to talk to a coach?  Please leave any non-emergency messages for the Coaches in the Coaches Communication Notebook.  For the safety of your swimmers, the Coaches can not take time away from practice to talk individually with you.  If you need to talk to any of the Coaches, just make a note in the Logbook including your name, child name, the best time to reach you, and how you can be reached (phone number, email, etc.)  The Coaches will check the logbook daily and will return calls as soon as possible.

Expectations of Coaches

  • I will treat all swimmers appropriately and fairly regardless of their ability
  • I will strive to build self-esteem in every swimmer
  • I will maintain a high level of sportsmanship and promote team spirit
  • I will be sensitive to the needs of all children and be aware of swimmers with special needs
  • I will maintain a safe environment for practices and meets
  • I will work with other coaches to set attainable goals and communicate with each swimmer
  • I will teach competitive terminology (i.e. 25 meters, flip turn, IM, etc.) and proper stroke techniques to all swimmers
  • I will discuss any "DQ" cards one-on-one with swimmers at practice the day following a meet.
